In early May, the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation hosted a workshop with representatives of Slovenian nature parks, dedicated to presenting and discussing the development of a new digital land management tool. The meeting was led by the LIFE TRŠCA project team, which presented the development timeline and key content features.
The new information tool will comprehensively integrate data on land parcels, management areas, plans, and conservation tasks. The system will be tailored to suit different types of land managers – from large national parks to smaller non-governmental organizations. Each user will have access only to content relevant to their role. It is also anticipated that certain data categories will be mandatory for state parks, as specified by the relevant ministry.
At the heart of the tool will be land parcels and management areas, with the ability to record legal relationships, planned objectives, and implementation tasks. One of the key advantages will be the possibility of storing all accompanying documentation – from spatial maps to strategic documents – in one central location.
Park representatives shared their experiences with existing practices – some already use internal systems to track tasks and objectives, while others do not yet have such a system. It was found that the proposed tool aligns well with existing practices, which will facilitate data transfer and implementation.
In the second part of the workshop, participants discussed data entry options, progress tracking, and planning of conservation measures. They also emphasized the need for additional presentations and training sessions, which the project team is already planning. Furthermore, users will be provided with manuals, video tutorials, and technical support to ensure the tool is as easy to use as possible.
Participants agreed that this is a well-designed project that addresses current needs in the management of protected areas. All expressed their support for further development and confirmed their willingness to participate in testing the database once it is ready for initial entries.
