LIFE TRŠCA: Testing different mowing regimes on Lake Cerknica

Land use practices play a crucial role in shaping biodiversity and ecosystems. Since it is often difficult to understand and monitor changes at the scale of entire ecosystems, impacts can be more effectively observed on smaller, modelled areas.

For this purpose, we will establish test plots at several locations around the intermittent Lake Cerknica , where we will study how different mowing regimes affect plant communities. The plots will be marked with stakes and managed according to a set plan – for example, mowed several times a year, once a year, once every two years, and so on. Establishing and maintaining these test plots is simple and cost-effective, yet they provide valuable insights that enhance both research and educational activities within the protected area.

In addition, one of the sites will be easily accessible to visitors of the lake, offering a unique opportunity to observe firsthand how mowing frequency influences the diversity of plant life.

With LIFE TRŠCA we will improve the conservation status of the intermittent Lake Cerknica.
