May 15 marks World Climate Change Day, which raises awareness about the increasingly visible consequences of climate change. Today, the impacts of climate change are also being felt in Slovenia through longer periods of drought, more frequent heavy rainfall, floods, and temperature extremes. Among the most vulnerable sectors are nature conservation and agriculture, both of which directly depend on water, healthy soil, and stable ecosystems.

Wetlands play an important role in mitigating the effects of climate change. They act as natural water retention areas, reduce the risk of flooding, help preserve moisture during dry periods, and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. At the same time, they provide habitats for many endangered plant and animal species.

Today, the impacts of climate change are also being felt in Slovenia through longer periods of drought, more frequent heavy rainfall, floods, and temperature extremes.

One of the most important examples of such an area in Slovenia is the intermittent Lake Cerknica, where the LIFE TRŠCA project is being implemented. The main goal of the project is to improve the conservation status of the intermittent Lake Cerknica through coordinated integration of nature conservation and sustainable agriculture. A special focus of the project is cooperation with local farmers and landowners, as nature-friendly farming practices are essential for the long-term preservation of this unique natural area.

As part of the project, new agri-environmental measures are being introduced and existing ones are being restored in order to promote adapted mowing practices and sustainable grassland management. These measures contribute to improving habitat conditions, water retention, and the resilience of the area. The project also includes activities aimed at preserving key wetland areas, monitoring habitat conditions, removing dead biomass, and exploring possibilities for its further use.

World Climate Change Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of cooperation between nature conservation, agriculture, experts, and the local community. Through a coordinated approach, the Notranjska Park aims to protect nature, support sustainable agriculture, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future.

Projects in the Notranjska Park

The implementation of extensive nature conservation projects exceeds the financial capacity of the local community, therefore Notranjska Park regularly applies for projects with the possibility of co-financing by the European Union.
