The Notranjska Regional Park, together with its external contractor, Komunala Cerknica, is carrying out restoration works at the karst pond on Slivnica. The pond is man-made, but due to the deterioration of the waterproof lining that previously held the water, it lost its function and is now in need of restoration.
The restoration will re-establish the pond and improve conditions for the conservation of biodiversity. Water bodies are rare in the Slivnica area, making them particularly important for the conservation of amphibians and other plant and animal species associated with aquatic habitats.
The restoration works include:
- felling trees and shrubs in and around the pond. A somewhat larger area than the pond itself needs to be cleared to allow for the installation of the new lining;
- removing sediment and soil that have accumulated on the bottom of the pond over the years;
- installing a new waterproof lining to ensure that the pond can retain water;
- restoring the immediate surroundings of the pond to create suitable conditions for the re-establishment of the aquatic habitat.
The restoration will re-establish an important small aquatic habitat on Slivnica and contribute to improving living conditions for species associated with wetlands.

The restoration of the pond is financed by the Climate Fund as part of the Climate Change Adaptation Project in protected areas established by local communities.
