On Saturday, 23rd of August, Notranjska Park organized an event in Dolenja vas, where visitors got a closer look at the work carried out within two European conservation projects – LIFE FOR SEEDS and LIFE OrnamentalIAS.
The event united conservationists, local residents, firefighters and nature enthusiasts, all sharing the same goal: to preserve the rich and healthy environment of the mystical land of Lake Cerknica.
From meadows to seeds and back again
As part of the LIFE FOR SEEDS project, a special brush harvester was presented. It collects seeds from species-rich meadows, which are then used to restore grasslands where biodiversity has been lost due to overgrowth, unsuitable interventions, or overly intensive use.
But the project goes beyond harvesting: it also includes the establishment of a seed bank to preserve seeds of different meadow species and the preparation of agri-environmental measures (KOPOP). These will make it easier for farmers to produce seed mixtures and use green mulch, contributing to the long-term preservation of meadows – one of our most important habitats.
Together against invasive species
The second project, LIFE OrnamentalIAS, focuses on combating invasive species that spread rapidly and displace native flora. Together with local residents and members of the Volunteer Firefighters’ Association of Dolenja vas near Cerknica, we tackled two persistent invaders – Himalayan balsam and goldenrod – which had spread along the Cerkniščica stream. By working hand in hand, we removed them and took an important step toward a healthier aquatic and riparian environment.
The event also emphasized how crucial it is to raise public awareness, as invasive species are often unintentionally spread by humans – through ornamental plantings, soil transport or waste disposal.
Conservation connects
The event was not only an opportunity for learning and action but also for socializing. We concluded with a pleasant gathering over refreshments prepared by the firefighters and with new plans for future joint actions.
Events like this confirm that conservation is most successful when experts and the local community come together. United, we can achieve a lot – for the meadows, the rivers, and for all life in our very special piece of the world.
LIFE FOR SEEDS
LIFE FOR SEEDS focuses on establishing a seed bank of 300 representative species of three priority habitat types at the European Union level.
The implementation of extensive nature conservation projects exceeds the financial capacity of the local community, therefore Notranjska Park regularly applies for projects with the possibility of co-financing by the European Union.
