The Cerknica Carnival is one of the most recognizable and popular carnival events in Slovenia. Every year it attracts thousands of visitors who want to experience a unique blend of imagination, satire, and the rich heritage of Notranjska.
During Carnival time, Cerknica becomes the scene of a very special procession, where we encounter giant figures and masks representing both biological and mythological inhabitants of Notranjska:
- the witch Uršula from Slivnica
- the Lake man Jezerko
- the giant pike
- the frog Rego Vranjejamski
- and numerous other legendary characters.
Of course, everything is spiced up with the noble stupidity and Notranjska humour.

The Great Carnival
The highlight of the week is the great carnival, which starts on Sunday at exactly around 12:32. At that time, both local figures and numerous visiting carnival groups, masks, bands and other silly ensembles walk through the streets of Cerknica. More than a thousand carnival performers and tens of thousands of visitors ensure an exceptional atmosphere in the Cerknica carnival.

The Week of Mischief
The carnival events last the whole week:
- Sawing of the witch – the traditional opening of the carnival on Fat Thursday
- TV Čohovo – a satirical local television parody
- Children's masquerade and themed parties
- The burial of the carnival on Ash Wednesday – a farewell to winter with plenty of humor
The town where witches, pikes, and the Butale residents come to life
We invite you to join the playful week in the mystical land of Lake Cerknica. You will be accompanied by friendly, witty, and loud carnival characters, whose energy will surely chase away winter and awaken your childlike curiosity in you.
