With its camouflage colors it literally blends into the surroundings and becomes practically invisible. Only its loud "buuuuuuh!" betrays it, which can be heard even a few kilometers away.
This solitary, cautious bird, which is active mainly at dusk when it searches for food, is also one of the most endangered species in Slovenia. Its favorite and only habitat during nesting season is the extensive reed beds along rivers and lakes, which humans, with thoughtless interference in the natural environment, still shrink and thereby threaten the survival of this mysterious heron.
Dense reed beds of Lake Cerknica represent a piece of intact wilderness, where in the middle of densely populated Europe, rare and endangered plants and animals are able to live at their own pace.
