It is a highly territorial animal and vigorously defends its home range against wolves from other packs and marks the borders of its territory through scent marking and howling. Sense of smell, along with excellent hearing, enable this predator to hunt in the dark and at night and to avoid humans – the sole and most formidable enemy.
Although the wolf is the ancestor of the dog, man's best friend, and is not dangerous to humans, it has fallen into great disfavor among people in the past centuries. In Europe we mercilessly hunted it and exterminated it from large areas as well.
With full protection for the wolf, its numbers began to rise, but it still remains one of the most endangered mammal species in Europe. Only after we reaccept the fact that wolf had lived here before us, and learn how to coexist, the life of wolves and people will take a turn for the better.
