The whites (Pieridae) are a large family, well represented in Europe, and in Slovenia there are 20 species of whites. These are common and recognizable butterflies that have white or yellow wings, some also orange. Most species have on their wings more or less pronounced dark or black patterns. In most whites, sexual dimorphism is clearly expressed, i.e., the sexes are easily distinguished by appearance. Several species in this family are good fliers that migrate long distances. Such are, for example, kapusov belin, repin belin, katančev selec and navadni senožetnik.

Caterpillars of some species are colored in warning colors and are therefore harder for predators to find, while others with their bright colors warn predators of their unpleasant taste. Among the whites there are also some crop pests. Such are, for example, kapusov belin and repin belin, which can cause substantial damage to cabbage and other crucifers, but their populations have been greatly affected by the use of pesticides.
