When nature becomes a playground

The winter landscape around Lake Cerknica has a special charm. The changing water, breathtaking views, and silence of nature invite you to explore and exercise in the fresh air. Set off on shorter, undemanding hiking trails that are also suitable for younger children.

Popular trails include:

  • The Drvošec Trail, which offers exceptional views of the intermittent Lake Cerknica and is an excellent choice for a relaxed family outing.
  • The Rakov Škocjan Educational Trail, where you can walk through the karst valley and admire the Great and Small Natural Bridges and the remains of the Church of St. Kancijan.
  • The Trail of Springs, an educational trail that takes you past 14 springs that fill the lake and create a unique karst landscape.
  • Mount Slivnica, known as the mountain of witches and the view from the top is a beautiful reward for your efforts.
  • Mount Špička, a peaceful trail with views of the wooded Menišija.

Hiking is a great opportunity to exercise and observe nature.

A Warm Haven of Stories and Exploration

When we long for warmth or when the weather does not allow for longer walks, the Visitor Center Lake Cerknica is an excellent choice. The interactive exhibition is designed with families in mind—children learn about the functioning of the intermittent lake through play and exploration, while adults discover fascinating facts about this unique natural phenomenon.

A special opportunity to visit will be on 21 February 2026, on the occasion of the International Tourist Guide Day, when families will be able to enjoy free admission to the exhibition.

You can complement your visit with a tour of the Museum of Lake Cerknica, where stories of life by the lake intertwine with the past and present of the local community.

An Underground Adventure for Curious Explorers

For a slightly different experience, you can set off to Križna Cave, one of the most beautiful water caves in Slovenia. The one-hour guided tour is easy and also suitable for children, making the visit both educational and fairy-tale-like. Underground lakes, stalactites, and the silence of the cave create a special atmosphere that captivates both young and old alike.
