Skippers (Hesperiidae) are a globally widespread family of butterflies.

In Europe there are about 40 species, of which 25 are found in Slovenia.

Skippers are small, stocky butterflies with a large head that is as wide as the thorax.

They have large eyes, and their antennae are set farther apart on the head than in other diurnal butterflies.

They are good fliers; many of them fly extremely fast and in a straight line just above the ground.

Many species in this family are migratory as well.

The wings of adult butterflies are generally subdued in color, with shades of gray, brown, and olive dominating.

The caterpillars of skippers live a solitary life in shelter they make from the leaves of their host plants, connected by a silken thread that they secrete.

In this silken shelter they also pupate.
